Culurgiones



Stuffed pasta pieces with origins from the mountainous central east of Sardinia, Culurgionesare hearty parcels filled with mashed potatoes, pecorino cheese, and mint, then finished off with an elaborate seam that makes them look like Asian dumplings. Their name translates to &#8216;little leather satchels&#8217; and are served with a rich tomato sauce. It’s filling, comfort food at its best and a must-try Sardinian dish.

Malloreddus alla Campidanese



From the southwest of Sardinia and consideredthequintessential Sardinia pasta dish, Malloreddus is often called &#8220;gnocchetti sardi&#8221; as its appearance is very similar to the potato dumplings yet this recipe is based in semolina. Its small ridges often created using a gnocchi board, help soak up all the sauce &#8211; &#8220;alla campidanese&#8221; &#8211; a thick dressing made with pork sausage, herbs like fennel, and rich tomatoes, then finished off with a generous sprinkle of pecorino cheese.

Spaghetti ai Ricci



If you still have room for more pasta and craving a seafood touch, Spaghetti ai Ricci is a fine spaghetti with sea-urchin that you&#8217;ll find on menus by the coast. A simple, fresh dish with an intense flavour of the sea with added spice from garlic and chilli lightly pan fried and then tossed with sea urchin at the last minute before serving. Often finished with a squeeze of lemon and fresh parsley.



Zuppa Gallurese



This northern Sardinian dish is more a casserole than a soup with layers of bread – often day-old or made with the traditional flatbread, pane carasau &#8211; topped with pecorino cheese and baked in a meat broth. The result – a pudding-style dish that is ideal in the cooler seasons.

Fregola



Small balls made of semolina flour, like pearl couscous, Fregola is often toasted before being cooked in a sauce and frequently added to a liquid broth to create a risotto-like dish. Fregola is served with a number of sauces, from vegetable version to seafood with fresh clams and prawns in a light saffron broth.

Seadas



Where sweet and savoury Sardinia meet in the perfect parcels. A traditional Sardinian dessert, fried dough pastry made with semolina flour filled with soft pecorino cheese then lightly fried and drizzled with Corbezzolo honey (not sugar), made from the flowers of the strawberry tree. The contrast of crunch, the soft filling, and the salty cheese against the sweet honey make it unique, but delicious, Sardinian treat.



Finish with Mirto



This famous Sardinian liqueur is made of myrtle berries (like blueberries), sipped at the end of a meal, and considered a refreshing drink to aid digestion. The counterpart to limoncello in Amalfi or gappa in Tuscany, its Sardinian roots and sweet yet strong flavour make it a must to try when travelling in Sardinia.

Barone di Villagrande &#8211; Old world wines by Mount Etna



The Nicolosi family have been cultivating vineyards since 1727 and are now in their 10th generation. Marco Nicolosi oversees the winemaking at the <a href="http://www.villagrande.it/en/barone_di_villagrande_en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Barone di Villagrande</a> estate that is nestled 700 meters high on the east side of Mount Etna with views towards Taormina and the Ionian Sea. A warm and wet climate produces excellent dry, fruity white wine, Etna Bianco D.O.C., based on Carricante grapes. Visit the vineyards and historical cellar for guided wine tastings and stay longer for lunch of Etnean dishes (paired with their wines, naturally) with vegetables and herbs grown from the Villagrande garden.

Once awarded the title of the best beach in Europe, S’Amarador is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Mallorca. The cliff village of Deià in northwestern Mallorca is known for its artistic locals and pretty pebble beach. A long, narrow road leads to the waters sheltered by woodlands admired for their natural beauty that includes two beachside chiringuito-style restaurants serving simple seafood dishes. Nestled in a bay hugged by rocky cliffs, Es Caló des Moro is a small beach only 40 metres long and lined with powder-fine sand and crystal-clear waters that sparkle in the most beautiful shades of blue in the summer sun. The scenic location makes it protected and ideal for swimming, with access to the sands via a steep flight of stairs. From Dolmadakia (rice stuffed grape leaves) to homegrown tomato salads or Sfakiano lamb stew, the menu changes with the seasons. While for something sweet, their take on a cheesecake is inspired by ancient Greek recipes and, in summer, topped with sumptuous strawberries.

This casual and rustic restaurant is steeped in history. If you’re looking for authenticity in every way, both on the dish and in the décor, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/taverna.erganos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Erganos</a> is a must. Think traditional taverna with an al fresco balcony for the summer months with a healthy selection of meat and vegetarian dishes. Order a plate of sarikopites, Cretan fried cheese pasties, then a traditional tsigariastó, a local lamb stew in wine sauce. Kirkor has been serving bougatsa in Crete for almost a hundred years – hence 1922 in their name – a filo pastry filled with sweet cream or local cheese sprinkled with a generous drizzle of honey. Rethymno



A picturesque promenade along a colourful port is lined with fishing boats, cafes and taverns, with architecture heavily influenced by its rich Venetian past. Wander Rethymno’s narrow lanes to discover old yet elegant mansions, churches and leafy gardens with a medieval flair. Yet its heritage goes even further, with Classical, Hellenic and Roman remains found at the Archaeological Museum (the marble statue of Aphrodite that dates to the 1st century AD is worth the entrance fee). The museum is perched on Paleokastro Hill beside an imposing medieval castle, the star-shaped 16th-century Fortezza, that overlooks Rethymno town and the sparkling Sea of Crete.

Chania Town



Arguably one of the most beautiful towns in Crete for its picturesque port, old town charm with medieval roots with added Egyptian and Ottoman influences. And a worthy visit with so much to explore. From the Cathedral of Eisodion tis Theotokou to the Archaeological Museum of Chania in the former monastery of St. Francis. To the Nautical Museum housed in the 16th-century fortress of Firka with its model ships and naval paraphernalia detailing the town’s maritime past. For a decent souvenir, head to the Leather Market for excellent shopping and a nod to Chania’s heritage as a leather-making hub. While the Municipal Market of Chania is a must-do for foodies, housed in a listed building dating to 1913 filled with butchers, grocers and other food stalls where you can witness the daily bustle of the locals and sample Cretan products like cheeses, olives, honey and the national drink of Crete, raki.

Loutro



With its whitewashed buildings coloured by blue shutters, pink bougainvillaea, and a bay of turquoise water, it’s a classic Greek island image that makes Loutro a popular destination – and worth venturing to. Access is by boat, or a long hike, from Chora Sfakion on Crete’s south coast, so those who make an effort are greeted by this luring small town with narrow alleys leading up to Lefka Ori or the White Mountains. Being a fishing village, it’s only natural to find along the waterside several fish taverns with checked tablecloths and fresh seafood on the menu, ideal for a long lunch. While a rocky pebble beach has sun lounges for hire, you can hike a portion of the E4 path, past centuries-old castle ruins, that boasts incredible views across the Libyan Sea.

Elafonissi (Elafonisi) – Best beach for rustic coastline



West coast Crete has an abundance of stunning beach bays, with Elafonissi one of the most picture-perfect. Think turquoise waters, soft white and pink sand &#8211; due to the thousands of broken seashells mixed into the soft grains – and a rustic coastline littered with cedar trees. Part of the beach has sunbeds and umbrellas, and the shallow waters are perfect for a refreshing frolic. Its cliffs and mountainous surrounding makes this Crete beach the go-to for many travellers.

Falassarna (Falasarna) – Best beach for windsurfing



Also on the west coast, Falassarna is a large sandy beach that, in the summer, has a pop-up windsurfing station to hire boards to take the choppy waters. As it is close to Kissamos town, which is famed for its Archaeological Museum, it also suits history buffs who hike from the beach to the nearby site of Ancient Falassarna with its history dating back to the 7th century BC.



Vai – Best beach for tropical vibes



Surrounded by the largest date palm tree forest in Europe, Vai’s natural beauty and its underdeveloped coastline are spectacular, making it a haven for beach dwellers for decades. The palm-lined beach is hugged by crystal clear waters and fine white sands, offering a seaside escape to transport you to the tropics. All whilst being firmly planted in northeastern Crete.

Balos &#8211; Best beach for wild and remote



Accessible via a dirt road best suited to 4WDs, Balos is perched on the Gramvousa Peninsula and is undoubtedly worth the drive. With no sun lounges or restaurants, it’s ideal for beach lovers who like to be left alone – and best to pack a lunch (and lots of water), plus an umbrella to shelter from the Crete summer heat. Lay your towel on the white sands and dive into the lagoon-style waters that are a sanctuary for monk seals and loggerhead sea turtles. If you prefer not to drive, take a ferry from Kissamos that also stops at Gramvousa Island.

Matala – Best beach for Blue Flag status



A quaint seaside village popular on the south coast of Crete, Matala’s long and wide sandy beach on Messara Bay and deep crystal waters have earnt it Blue Flag beach status. Plenty of dining options, many with sea views, line the village, filled with quaint laneways that are fun to wander and window shop post-meal. While man-made caves carved into sandstone cliffs are worth exploring after a water frolic.

Paris Sigalas began his wine journey in 1991 to produce the first vintage labelled Protected Designation of Origin of Santorini. Wine marking is in his blood – his estate was handed down from his wine-making grandfather, including techniques taught through the generations. Take a tour of <a href="https://sigalas-wine.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sigalas Winery</a>, where you&#8217;ll visit the vineyards to see the ancient koulara, where vines are woven into basket-like twists. Then taste their speciality &#8211; Assyrtiko grape – that makes a crisp dry white, and sample the wines, including reds during a food pairing with a private sommelier. A-la-carte tasting packages can also be curated by the resident Chef.

Or try one of their flights that come in six 60-ml samples. From sparkling wine to rosé, several crisp Assyrtiko whites and gorgeous dry reds. If you are a sweet wine fan, Kratiras, a sweet red wine made from sun-dried grapes, is a savvy way to finish. Take a guided tour of the cellars before a wine tasting. The Argyros family have been winemakers for over four generations and continue traditional production mixed with cutting-edge technology to make their Estate wines that use three indigenous grapes – Assyrtiko, Aidani and Mavrotragan. Gavalas



Another celebrated family-run winery, <a href="https://www.gavalaswines.gr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gavalas</a> is one of the oldest in Santorini by the village of Megalochori. Five generations of winemakers have continued to focus on small-batch production of the vibrant Assyrtiko grape and Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. They are the only winery in Santorini that produces the rare indigenous grapes of Katsano and Voudomato to make ten labels that showcases Santorini&#8217;s complex terroir. Perugia

For art, Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria is a must-see, housed in the Gothic Palazzo dei Priori with 3000 works on show across 40 rooms. Be sure to also visit the staterooms of the Nobile Collegio del Cambio and Della Mercanzia whilst at the palace. If feeling energetic, climb Sciri Tower. Torre Degli Sciri is the city’s only medieval tower that remains fully intact and rises to 42m (138ft). Take the 232 steps to the top for magnificent views over the Umbrian countryside.

Assisi



Assisi is considered one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage, famed for its imposing cathedral, Basilica di San Francesco, perched 400 metres (1,300 feet) upon Monte Subasio overlooking the valleys of the Topino and Chiascio rivers. The birthplace of Saint Francis in 1181, Assisi&#8217;s UNESCO-listed historic centre retains much of its medieval features, including its original 12th and 13th-century walls. The main draw, however, is the artwork within the cathedral. Twenty-eight vibrant frescoes by Giotto depicting the life of St Francis and works by Cimabue, of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, are found in the cathedral&#8217;s upper and lower levels.

Todi



Another picturesque Umbrian hilltop town, Todi, is lesser travelled, making it all the more alluring. Unique for its three walls from different eras – Etruscan, medieval, and Roman &#8211; its narrow laneways lead to its centre, Piazza del Popolo, home to multiple palaces and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata with its fresco painted by Ferraù Fenzoni of The Last Judgement, said to be inspired by Michelangelo&#8217;s work in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. While nearby, the Museo Pinacoteca Comunale, within the 13th-century Palazzo del Capitano, showcases a collection of historical paintings, old ceramics and coins.

Orvieto



A popular stop between Florence and Rome, Orvieto sits high on a rocky face and is known for its breathtakingly beautiful Gothic cathedral, known simply as the Duomo. The cathedral&#8217;s ornate marble facade, which dates back to the 13th century, rivals the Duomo’s of Siena and Florence. Orvieto&#8217;s narrow medieval streets with eateries are ideal for a bowl of <a href="https://amaselections.com/magazine/the-must-try-food-and-wine-of-umbria" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Umbria pasta of strangozzi</a>, a thick rustic noodle, popular with black truffles or a spoletina sauce of tomatoes and garlic olive oil and parsley, and best served with a glass of <a href="https://amaselections.com/magazine/wine-tasting-in-umbria-italy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">local Umbrian wine</a>.
