The Monaco Grand Prix follows a winding route through the streets of Monaco, passing beside the harbor (into which more than one race car driver has plunged), through a tunnel and following tight twists and turns that challenge the most experienced drivers. The race is comprised of 78 laps and is notoriously difficult. Nelson Piquet likened it to “driving a bicycle around your living room.”
Begun in 1929 (with the enthusiastic support of the Prince of Monaco) it remains one of the most prestigious Formula One motor races and is supported by the Monaco royal family to this day. It is one of the three races making up the Triple Crown of Motorsport, the others being the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours Le Mans.
William Grover Williams won the first Grand Prix in 1929 with an average speed of 48 mph. The average time for the most recent races is 101 mph with the fastest clocked at 207 mph. Ayrton Senna is the driver with the most wins–six with five consecutive wins between 1989-1993. Following him with five wins each are Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher.
The races continued from 1929 to 1938 when they were halted due to WWII. The Grand Prix resumed in 1945 and has continued to this day except for the year 1959 when the race was cancelled due to the death of Prince Louis II.
Originally there were little to no barriers between the cars and the spectators. It wasn’t until 1969 that Amco barriers were erected at certain points. Drive into Monaco today just a few weeks before the race and you will see grandstands erected on either side of the course where thousands of spectators will eagerly follow the race. Luckier spectators can watch from residences overlooking the course or party on the Red Bull floating island.
The next race takes place May 23-26, 2019. Make plans and get tickets early as this is one of the most popular races in Europe.
