Tucked within the peaceful hills of Benahavís, Marbella offers a quieter, more nature driven side of southern Spain. At Villa Montemayor, contemporary architecture meets panoramic mountain and sea views, creating a retreat that feels deeply connected to its surroundings while remaining just moments from the energy of the coast.

We spoke with owner Catherine about the inspiration behind the villa, her favorite places in the region, and what makes this corner of Andalusia so special year round.

What drew you to Marbella, and what makes this property so special to you?

Marbella is blessed with an exceptional climate, where sunshine and mild temperatures persist even in winter. While many still see it as just a destination for nightlife and sunbathing, those who know it well understand its rare diversity, where the sea meets the mountains, culture meets adventure, and tradition blends seamlessly with modernity.

Unlike other Mediterranean destinations I know intimately, such as Mallorca, Corsica, or the French Riviera, Marbella and its surroundings, from Málaga to Estepona, offer a vibrant, year round lifestyle.

Villa Montemayor is special because it sits in Montemayor Alto, a hidden sanctuary just minutes from Marbella’s energy yet worlds apart in tranquility. Here, breathtaking mountain views, absolute privacy, and a deep connection to nature coexist with modern luxury and Andalusian charm. It’s a retreat designed for both summer escapes and winter getaways, where every season feels like a celebration.

The villa blends contemporary architecture with its natural surroundings beautifully. What was the design philosophy behind the home?

The vision was to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living. Designed by a Dutch architect, the villa features expansive glass walls, open spaces, and natural materials like wood and stone that blur the boundaries between inside and out.

Every detail, from the infinity pool mirroring the sky to the landscaped gardens, was thoughtfully curated to enhance the beauty of the surroundings and create a peaceful retreat no matter the season.

What is your favorite space in the villa?

My favorite space is the outdoor terrace by the pool. It’s where I start my mornings with a coffee, listening to the first notes of the cicadas as the sun rises over the mountains.

In the evenings, it transforms completely. Guests can relax under the stars, admiring the deep blue reflections of the swimming pool alongside the silhouettes of the surrounding pine trees.

What do you enjoy most about the location, and what can guests expect to discover nearby?

The location of Villa Montemayor is truly extraordinary. Nestled within a private gated residence in Montemayor Alto, the villa offers peace, privacy, and direct access to some of Andalusia’s most beautiful landscapes.

From the front door, guests can head into the mountains on foot or by bike, with trails leading all the way to the historic Castillo de Montemayor. The dramatic gorges of Benahavís are also nearby, perfect for canyoning and exploring hidden trails.

Yet despite the tranquility, the beaches, golf courses, restaurants, and marina of Marbella remain only a short drive away.

Are there any standout amenities or experiences that make the villa unique?

Villa Montemayor stands out for its spacious infinity pool, panoramic terraces, and fully equipped gourmet kitchen designed for guests who love to cook and entertain.

The gardens are also incredibly special. Depending on the season, guests may be able to pick fresh mint, lemons, oranges, bananas, or papayas directly from the property.

Within the residence, guests benefit 24/7 gated security, an on site café serving breakfast, and a convenient shop for everyday essentials.

What kind of experience do you hope guests have during their stay?

I want guests to feel as though they’ve stepped into their own private paradise, where every moment is designed for relaxation and connection.

One of the most magical parts of staying here is watching does and stags gracefully roam around the property. Whether it’s a family escape, a romantic getaway, or time spent with friends, the villa is designed for guests to slow down, reconnect, and create lasting memories under the Andalusian sun, even in winter.

Is there a memory at the villa that truly captures its atmosphere?

One of my most cherished memories is hosting Christmas dinner on the terrace beside the firepit, under twinkling pine trees, with the sun warming our skin and the mountains rising in the distance.

Then celebrating New Year’s barefoot at a beach club by the sea. That contrast captures the magic of Villa Montemayor perfectly, every season here feels special in its own way.

Do you have any hidden gems in the region that you always recommend to guests?

I always recommend visiting the village of Benahavís for its authentic tapas bars, charming atmosphere, and beautiful mountain views.

Food is such an important part of travel. What are some of your favorite local restaurants?

The Costa del Sol offers an incredible culinary scene. For lively dinners and perfectly grilled meats, Los Bandidos is a classic. For rustic Andalusian charm and wood fired cooking, Los Abanicos is unforgettable.

For long seaside lunches, Malva Beach by Besaya serves fresh seafood with beautiful beachfront views. I also love La Bulla Gastrobar for its exceptional tuna dishes, and the legendary Sunday brunch at Planta Bistrot.

For guests focused on wellness, a morning session at I/O Club followed by breakfast at their café is the perfect way to start the day.

What are some of the must do experiences for guests staying at the villa?

Golf lovers are spoiled for choice with world class courses just minutes away, while adventure seekers can go kitesurfing near Estepona or explore the hiking trails leading directly from the villa into the mountains.

For glamour and nightlife, Puerto Banús offers luxury boutiques, restaurants, and beach clubs, while Marbella’s historic old town reveals a more cultural and authentic side of the region.

Guests can also enjoy whale watching excursions along the coast, tree top adventures in the mountains, scenic coastal walks, and unforgettable sunsets over the Mediterranean.

Marbella has evolved tremendously in recent years. Beyond its glamorous reputation, it has become a destination that embraces wellness, nature, culture, and outdoor living, making it an exceptional place to visit throughout the year.
