Our Guide to Spending a Week in Montepulciano

One of our guests recently stayed this fall at the beautiful La Residenza. This charming Italian villa is located in the small Tuscan village of Castelmuzio, in the area of Montepulciano. Well known by wine connoisseurs as a home to one of the finest Italian red wines, Montepulciano is a must-visit destination for those interested in wine and delicious Italian cuisine. In addition to food and wine experiences, our guests also requested spa recommendations and family friendly activities for small children. The following is the itinerary we provided them which they thoroughly enjoyed. Read on for inspiration to spending the perfect week in Montepulciano.

A Week in Montepulciano: Wine, Dine and Swim under the Stars

This itinerary is a perfect starting point for your stay in this magical region however, we can fully tailor your stay according to your tastes and preferences.

Day 1:

Arrival at 4PM

Enjoy a typical Italian dinner cooked by private chef at your villa

Day 2:

Garden experience, wine tasting and lunch at Podere le Ripi in Montalcino (45 min drive from La Residenza)

Podere le Ripi is a biodynamic farm focused on wine production. It’s considered one the best wine tasting experiences in the area. Our guests chose the Biodynamic Vegetable Garden experience. This experience is recommended for families with kids and includes dressing up like a farmer, interacting with farm animals, picking seasonal produce for your lunch as well as Brunello di Montalcino wine tasting, cellar tour and lunch.

Day 3:

Pizza making class and lunch at the villa

La Residenza has an authentic wood fired pizza oven. The chef arrives in the morning to start the perfect fire. The guests then learn how to make their very own pizza using the best Italian ingredients and then enjoy their pizza creation once finished.

In the evening enjoy swimming under the stars at Posta Marcucci in Bagno Vignoni (30 min drive from La Residenza)

Located in a spa village Bagno Vignoni, Posta Marcucci Hotel has two beautiful outdoor thermal water pools with views of the valley. The experience of swimming under the stars can be combined with a private massage and dinner.

Day 4:

Farm tour and lunch at Podere Il Casale in Monticchiello (25 min drive from La Residenza)

Podere Il Casale is one of the best cheese producers in the area. An estate with breathtaking views of the picturesque Tuscan countryside, Podere Il Casale has farm animals (sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys and peacocks) to entertain kids and an excellent restaurant for the adults to enjoy. In addition, farm tours, cheese tastings, picnics, cooking classes and truffle hunting can be arranged.

Day 5:

Wine tasting and dinner at Salcheto in Montepulciano (30 min drive from La Residenza)

Salcheto is an eco-sustainable, innovative wine estate in Montepulciano. In addition to learning about the history and culture of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano winemaking and tasting of Salcheto’s fine wines, visitors can have lunch or dinner at the winery’s restaurant.

Day 6:

Picnic at Cugusi farm in Montepulciano (25 min drive from La Residenza)

Caseificio Cugusi is another one of the best cheese producers in the area. They propose an exciting picnic experience. Visitors are invited to choose the cheeses, cold cuts and other snacks including local wine at the farm’s shop and then enjoy their picnic sitting comfortably at tables located in the gardens. Picnic baskets, beautiful views of Montepulciano and plenty of space for kids to run around are provided.

Day 7:

Garden tour and dinner at La Foce in Val d’Orcia (40 min drive from La Residenza)

La Foce is a historic estate dating back to the 15th century. It is world-famous for its picturesque cypress tree lined road and its magnificent gardens. Our guests had a garden tour booked for them in the late afternoon. A garden tour was then followed by dinner at the estate’s restaurant Dopolavoro offering seasonal Tuscan dishes.
